We have been waiting for on the rescue list for a while, and River King finally had a match for us! Meet our new “baby” Sugar the Newfoundland!

She is actually 5-years-old, but she is so sweet! She has only been with us 3 days, and she has already made herself completely at home. She has claimed the love seat as her throne, although, as you can see in this picture, the couch will do as well.

Luckily, she was well taken care of in the past, but sadly her last owner was an elderly man, and he passed on, and the wife was unable to keep her. We are going to take very good care of her though, and are so happy to have her in our home!

Interestingly enough, we are told that she had little interest in toys, but over the past couple of days she has made it sort of an obsession to go around the house collecting stuffed animals and gathering them anywhere she is laying, and cuddling them up. She doesn’t chew on them, but licks them, and nuzzles them. We have been told that since she was recently spayed, this might be a sort of nesting instinct, and she might think they are her puppies. Her dog bed is upstairs in the loft, so when she goes upstairs to go to bed, she takes all the toys back up stairs with her, and gathers them around her, and when she comes back downstairs to lounge, she brings them all back down and places them back around her on the couch again.

She has also been extremely careful around the kids. We have a 14-month-old, and she has not knocked him over once. Anytime she walks near him, she slows down, and treads very carefully. In fact, when she gets done going potty, she normally bolts inside, and today he was waiting at the slider. She started to bolt inside, but when she got to the door, and found him waiting there, she stopped, and waited for me to pick him up before she finished her plunged inside the house. She will also stop on the stairs if we are going up at the same time as her, and wait for us to finish walking up, or to go past.

I just can’t believe how sweet and loving she is! She has been listening well. She was wanting to jump on the counters, but a couple of “nos”, and she hasn’t done it since, and we didn’t even have to say it too sternly. The only thing we are really having to work on is the pulling on the leash, and overall, she doesn’t do that too often either, just when she gets excited. Although, I suppose I shouldn’t say pulling because when she does it I go flying! Haha!
